GOSHEN - A Newburgh man was sentenced Wednesday to 16 to 19 years in state prison for manslaughter and other charges in connection with the death of his on-and-off girlfriend in 2019. Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Matthew Mercado, 40, of Newburgh, pleaded guilty on Aug. 5, 2022, to second-degree manslaughter, second-degree burglary and tampering with physical evidence, all felonies. Those charges were connected to the death of Jessica Lopez, a 36-year-old city of Newburgh woman who was last seen Nov.
